I'm very excited to be involved with a group of Down Under authors who I both like and admire. And the scope of the setting had immense appeal. The rugged outback of Australia. Sophisticated Down Under cities. Tropical paradise. And verdant New Zealand. Wow!
When we first brainstormed the series I planned to write a book set in the outback - about a lost heir who finds a diamond mine, source of the mysterious pink diamonds. I teemed him with an in-his-face alpha heroine… and the sparks flew. But once we turned in our proposal, the Senior Editor changed the order of the authors around and suggested that we re-think one or two story ideas. I ended up writing the story that Maxine Sullivan had originally worked on. My story about the lost heir and his alpha lady disappeared into the outback dust - but one day I will write that story. Otherwise it will tantalize me to death…
Instead I met and fell in love with a new set of characters: Jessica and Ryan. As I grappled with Pride & A Pregnancy Secret many aspects of the story changed. Dynamics changed. My hero became a bit tougher, more removed. My heroine changed to accommodate that. As these transitions happened I had to make sure that they fitted in with what already existed in the other stories, so that the other authors could work with the changes I planned. Even at the last minute Bron and I re-ordered the sequence of events in those first two books. And through all this whispered a constant refrain "Keep it simple. Don't make it too complicated."
But the Diamonds Down Under series is unashamedly complex - a lot of the depth of emotion and the intense relationships comes from the layers we wove in. The red herrings. The scandals. The secrets. There's glitter, glamour - sometimes greed - and always passion. May you be as swept away by the people in our Diamonds Down Under world as we were.
